President Akufo-Addo recently described how the coronavirus pandemic harmed African economies, particularly Ghana’s. Ghana’s president told the international community at the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, September 21, that just as Ghana and other African countries were trying to get out of the pandemic, Russia invaded Ukraine, complicating matters.
A portion of Nana Akufo Addo’s speech reads;
“As we grappled with these economic challenges, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine burst upon us, aggravating an already difficult situation.
“It is not just the dismay that we feel at seeing such deliberate devastation of cities and towns in Europe in the year 2022, we are feeling this war directly in our lives in Africa.
“Every bullet, every bomb, every shell that hits a target in Ukraine, hit our pockets and our economies in Africa.”

However, holding a contrary view, Afriyie-Ankrah said the economy was in tatters before the war. “The credit rating agencies started warning before Russia Ukraine,” he stressed when he had an interview with Johnnie Hughes on TV3.
