The President of the Republic, H.E. Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, is under pressure to resign due to the country’s worsening economic hardships.
Lawyer Martin Kpebu, a private legal practitioner, led some Ghanaians on the streets of Accra today, Saturday, November 5, in a demonstration dubbed “Kume Preko reloaded.”
Protesters demanded that the President and his Vice President, Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia, resign by the following Wednesday.
They believe the President is to blame for the current difficulties because he has refused to fire his cousin Finance Minister, Mr. Ken Ofori-Atta, despite calls from NPP MPs.
They have also labeled the President a dictator who has flatly refused to listen to advice, leading Ghana into a quagmire.
Protesters held placards that read, among other things, “impeach the president,” “boo the president,” “we voted for service, not opulence,” “greedy bofrot,” “Cedi devaluation = Agyapa deal,” “fly out on a luxury jet, as usual, and never return; go into exile,” and “enough of the lies and deception.”
What appears to have sparked yet another social media backlash is the president’s old social media post from the 2016 election campaign.
In the same post, the President, who was then in opposition, urged Ghanaians to vote him out of office if he failed to deliver on his campaign promises.
“Try me this year as well.” Allow me to demonstrate my abilities. Four years isn’t such a long time. If I come and fail, please kick me out. God knows my heart, and I can assure you that I will not let you down. “I am offering the people of Ghana progress and prosperity,” Nana Akufo-Addo wrote on Facebook in 2016.
