Police in Perth has arrested a 48-year-old man for having multiple wives. According to the police, the man will appear in court on bigamy charges. He has been accused of being separated but not divorced from his first wife when he married his second wife in July 2020.
Aside from the second woman he married in July 2020, the suspect was reported to have married a third woman last year after divorcing his second wife.
The investigation was launched after the man’s first wife, who lives in the eastern states, contacted the second wife via social media and exposed his alleged duplicity.
According to them, the second marriage was deemed null and void in Australia because the man was still legally married to his first wife.
There have been no allegations of bigamy in connection with the third marriage. He is accused of declaring that he had ‘never validly married’ and signing a formal ‘declaration of no legal impediment to marriage’.
‘This type of deception and offense has long-term and negative real-life consequences for the victims and families involved, and the AFP will ensure that such allegations are thoroughly investigated,’ he said in a statement.
